“You’re welcome,” I said, sounding all the world like she had thanked me for opening the door. I knew full well I was going to pay for that later but that was kind of the point. Maybe I had just never grown past the “he’s teasing you because he likes you” stage or because I just liked having “a thing” with Murphy I didn’t mind whatever payback was coming.
Folding myself into the Beetle I reached in the back and handed her one of those insulated lunch sacks that kids took to school.
“Snacks for the road?” I asked, a semi-peace offering for the door stunt. “It’s not a long trip but it’s a good excuse to eat gummy bears and jerky.”
